I’ve found out that paramedics had more hours of training but that is about it. But is there something more that a paramedic can do than an EMT? How do you know which is in the ambulance? Is it one of each? Thanks

Most smartphones have one or two great cooking apps, and while using your pocketable device to help out in the kitchen can be more convenient than finding a place for your laptop or wasting paper, smart-home blog Unplggd has a clever suggestion: Our new apartment has some pretty archaic kitchenware. So old, we can’t quite figure out how to use the timer on the oven. While we could just look at the clock and determine how long something needs to be on the stovetop or in the cooker, we tend to get distracted easily and realize only too late that we’ve been cooking for too long. In order to keep from burning all our meals we now use an iPod Touch and a car mount. It’s sort of like a tinkering third hand but for the kitchen. I particularly love the previously mentioned Epicurious app for iPhone/iPod touch, and I could absolutely see using something like this in the kitchen. If you’re ever on the lookout for ways to reuse and recycle—or perhaps just to drink a lot of wine—this wine-bottle garden border is a clever and attractive repurposing project. Annie and Alexis Thomas were looking for a green way to edge their gardens in an interesting and novel way. They edged their sizeable garden with 489 bottles—most collected from local restaurants and wine stores—partially buried, as the demarcation between the gardens and the foot paths that wind through them. Wine bottles are sturdy, especially the bottoms, and will last as long as they want to keep them in the garden before shipping them off to be recycled. Check out the link below—scroll down past their cool solar shower to get to the wine bottle project—for more information, or visit the via link to see more examples of wine and beer bottles being used to edge gardens. Have a recycling trick up your sleeve? Let’s hear about it in the comments. Wine Bottle Garden Edging [Ready Made via Re-Nest ]

Infiniti’s 5-series rival used to be a nice, but anonymous car. After hooning it through Southern California’s canyons, that’s no longer the case. Now, the 2011 Infiniti M is Japan’s Jaguar. Full Disclosure: Infiniti wanted us to drive the new M so badly they flew us out to San Diego, put us up in a fancy hotel and hired one of GQ’s top ten sommeliers to serve us fancy wine. I thought the Viognier was pretty acidic and wasn’t terribly impressed with the Pinot Noir either. Maybe we shouldn’t believe everything you read in magazines. Nissan’s luxury brand has always been a second rate player in some of the most competitive vehicle classes in the world. They want to be BMW, but basing cars on the front-wheel drive Maxima platforms was never going to get them there. Then, starting with the 2009 G37 Sedan and more recently the Coupe and 2009 G37 Convertible , Infiniti suddenly became competitive. You don’t need to make excuses for Infiniti’s latest generation of cars. And you definitely don’t need to make excuses for the new M. The V6-engined 2011 Infiniti M37 is more powerful, lighter and cheaper than either the 2011 BMW 535i or the 2010 Mercedes E350. The 5.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 in the 2011 Infiniti M56 makes 420bhp and 417 Lb-Ft and weighs 4,028 Lbs. Compare that to the twin-turbo 2011 BMW 550i and its 407 HP, 442 Lb-Ft and 4,200 Lbs. It’s actually the lighter 2011 Infiniti M37S that we prefer driving. You can feel that it’s 170 Lbs lighter in the nose, leading to greater agility and lighter steering. Both the 37S and 56S are fitted with an active rear-wheel steering system that can turn the rear wheels into a corner by up to one degree. In action, it settles the rear as the car steers into a corner, which allows the car to steer faster. This isn’t just an on-paper gimmick either, you can feel the rear tucking itself in as you steer aggressively into a corner. …

Disney held a special screening in Los Angeles today, giving us a sneak peek at the brand new Tron Legacy theatrical trailer, a brief return to the video game world of 1982 computer graphics landmark Tron. Then we saw it again. While other cities held their own Tron Legacy events today, offering a painfully quick 2-minute trailer and a polite request to get the hell out, the one held in Southern California gave Tron fans a second glance. As an added bonus, the director of Tron Legacy, Joseph Kosinski, was on hand for a Q&A session between trailer viewings. Also in attendance was original Tron director Steven Lisberger, who is acting in a producer role for the sequel. Let’s talk about what we saw. The trailer—well, portions of it anyway—were in IMAX 3D, as immediately evidenced by the Walt Disney Pictures logo, which transformed into a bluish, scanlined version for authentic video game effect. The trailer opens with Sam, the son of Jeff Bridges’ character Kevin Flynn from the first Tron, receiving word from his father’s old friend Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) that he believes his father may still be alive—offering no theories that Flynn is trapped within a computer program. His evidence? A phone call from the old Flynn’s Arcade, where son Sam travels—in extreme, reckless youth motorcycling fashion that should translate well to piloting a lightcycle—to seek out his father. After poking around the dusty abandoned arcade, full of still-functioning arcade cabinets, Sam stumbles upon the digitizer that sent the original Flynn into the virtual world where Programs fight for survival in familiar Tron arcade games. The following sequences were all quick cuts, some of them in dazzling 3D, including a stunning shot of the massive bipedal Recognizers, looking far more detailed, and more than one Program arming himself with a deadly disc, ready to throw at another…

Just when we thought Torii Hunter had the best pre-swing gesture in baseball history , along comes Alex Rodriguez to steal the show. A-Rod’s sex life seems to have garnered much attention during his time with the New York Yankees, and although most of the time he has been able to maintain himself while on the field, that hasn’t always been the case for the All-Star shortstop. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that he was at it once again. While some may say he was simply “warming his bat,” I would have to qualify this as “getting his wood a little too hot in public.” Something tells me that we were close to witnessing a fire in his pants. After all, rubbing two wooden sticks together for a long enough period of time is surely capable of causing such an incident.

With so many hot and fit athletes in attendance at the 2010 Winter Games, it is not surprising to hear that they were expecting a lot of sexual intercourse to take place within the Olympic Village. That was why the Canadian Foundation for AIDS research decided to donate 100,000 condoms for free to the approximately 7000 athletes participating at the games. That is an average of 14 condoms per person. And so when word came out that the village was running “dangerously low” on condoms as the Games wind down, we can’t help but wonder, “Who is having all the sex?” “When we heard about the condom shortage in Vancouver, we felt it important to respond immediately,” said Kerry Whiteside, CANFAR’s Executive Director. The organization assembled three large boxes of about 8,500 condoms, much to the relief of libidos at the Olympic Village. They’re expected to arrive on Thursday. [ The National Post ] When you consider the fact that of the 7000 athletes, many of them are likely married and/or do not use condoms, and many more are likely having sex with each other (meaning that between the pair they will have 28 condoms), somewhere along this chain, someone must be putting in a lot of mileage on their bed springs. So with the unveiling of this news, we can begin to speculate who the front runner of this 2-week romp-fest is. I think I will go with any female on this list of beauties . Wishful thinking? Perhaps, but isn’t that the spirit of the Olympic Games? Hat Tip – [ Larry Brown Sports ]

Buying life insurance can be a pretty confusing affair, what with all the different options and plans available. Finance blog Get Rich Slowly helps sort it all out and explains what to look for in a policy. Photo by Amanda Govaert . Certified Financial Planner Sanford Ellowitz says that the key is determining the kind of cashflow your family would need in order to pay the bills and reach other goals in your absense. Start by figuring out how much you’re worth, and how much money you have flowing in and out each month. Next, consider what your future obligations will be, like paying for your kid’s college and seeding a retirement fund. After that, you can decide what type of life insurance is best. Term life insurance is the cheapest, but it’s exactly what it says it is. If you get a term policy for 20 years and find that you need coverage after that, you’re out of luck. You’ll have to apply again, when you’re older and maybe not as healthy. Also, if you outlive the term of your policy, you don’t get anything back. Betting against your own longevity to save money may seem like a good idea now, but you might end up kicking yourself – or worse – down the line. Hit up the post to learn about other types of life insurance and get pointers on what to look for while shopping around. Once you’ve got an estimate of how much life insurance you’ll need, check out the previously mentioned life insurance calculator to see how your figures compare. We’d love to know what tips
