Winning Webb: Simpson birdies way to Deutsche Bank Championship in playoff
John Nestor – AHN Sports Correspondent Norton, MA, United States (AHN Sports) – Webb Simpson cooled off on the back nine but got hot again just in time. Simspon carded birdies on his final three holes, including two in a playoff to win the Deutsche Bank Championship Monday at TPC Boston. The late birdie binge gave Simpson his second career PGA Tour title, and second this season, while leaving Chez Reavie to wonder what could have been. “I missed the cut at the PGA and then won Greensboro, my first win ever,” Simpson said. “I really haven’t had time to reflect on that because the playoffs started. So I really don’t know what to think right now.” After a birdie on 18 to end regulation, Simpson birdied the par-5 18th again but so did Reavie to send the playoff to the 17th hole. There Reavie two-putted from about 23 feet while Simpson drained a clutch putt for the third straight hole, this one from just inside nine feet for the win. ” I told someone I thought getting that second win would be easier than the first but it was tough,” Simpson said. “To finish the way I did and birdie 17 was awesome.” Simpson and Reavie finished regulation tied at 15-under-par 269. Simpson fired a 6-under 65 and Reavie, who had a two stroke lead with two holes to play, a 66. Reavie bogeyed the 18th in regulation after pulling a wedge from 117 yards. He was unable to get up-and-down to preserve a one-shot cushion after Simpson birdied 18 from 21 feet. “My game plan on 18 with a one-shot lead was to hit it up the left and lay it up and wedge it on and make a par,” Reavie said. “All I had to do was make a par and there was no risk in that unless you hit a wedge over the green.” The victory not only puts Simpson in first in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings but adds to a memorable season as he welcomed his first child earlier this year and claimed his first PGA Tour title at last month’s Wyndham Championship. “To be number one in the FedEx Cup with two weeks to go, I couldn’t ask for anything more,” Simpson said. “The goal is to be in the top five heading into Atlanta and it…

Miss McCord received some flack for not wearing a bike helmet, then again her hair did look fabulous after all.
Europe’s largest retailer Carrefour reports huge net loss
Linda Young – AHN News Writer Paris, France (AHN) – European retail giant Carrefour reported a net loss or $360 million for the first six months of the year compared to a net profit of $140 million for the same period a year earlier. French company Carrefour is Europe’s largest supermarket chain, and it is the world’s second biggest retailer behind Walmart. It operates 9,500 stores in 32 countries. While warning that it expected its full-year profits would be down by 15 percent, Carrefour officials said the retail climate across Europe was increasingly challenging. Carrefour took a one-time $1.28 billion charge-off, blaming a drop in the value of its business in Italy. Earnings were down by 33 percent overall in Europe and by 40 percent in France, its core market. Company officials blamed a reorganization of its systems, which caused product shortages in inventory, along with increases in prices of raw materials for the steep drop in profits in France. Overall, Carrefour said it had also made mistakes in raising prices above its main competition, which led to a loss of sales. Management said they plan decisive action to return the company to profitability. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved
Nation’s disaster relief agency FEMA says it is nearly broke
Linda Young – AHN News Writer Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – FEMA officials say they are not sure they will have enough money to help all the victims who suffered losses from Hurricane Irene this weekend. A bad economy coupled with a string of costly disasters and political wrangling over the nation’s budget has left the Federal Emergency Management Agency nearly broke. That means FEMA might not have the money to help communities and individuals hit by disasters in the future. FEMA is the agency that responds when disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding or wildfires cause widespread destruction in one or more communities. However, it takes money to respond to emergencies, and FEMA has only $800,000 on hand. Although the agency can pay for emergency repairs, it does not have enough money to take on long-term projects. Examples of long-term projects include rebuilding the schools, roads and other structures that were damaged or destroyed in recent tornadoes in places like Joplin, Missouri. FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said Monday that he was not sure the agency had enough money on hand to help victims of Hurricane Irene. Irene caused damage with extensive flooding in heavily populated areas from North Carolina to Vermont over the weekend. Fugate said it was important for the US Congress to appropriate additional funds for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30 as well as increase appropriations for the 2012 fiscal year. However, there is a sticking point. Republican lawmakers have said that they favor giving FEMA more to deal with emergencies. However, they have also said they want to make sure that any additional money for to deal with disasters is cut from other programs instead of coming from new funding. That has left the appropriations bill for FEMA, which is included in the appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security, hung up in the US Senate. FEMA, Democrats and the Obama administration have said they do not want to pit disaster victims against other Americans for assistance. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved

Gaddafi’s son killed: rebel officer
Still image of Muammar Gaddafi’s son Khamis, left. Tripoli – Fallen Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi’s son Khamis has been killed in a clash near the capital Tripoli, a senior rebel officer said on Monday. Colonel Al-Mahdi Al-Haragi, in charge of the Tripoli Brigade of the rebel army, said he had confirmation that Khamis was badly wounded in the clash near Ben Walid and Tarhoni. He was taken to a hospital but died of his wounds and was buried in the area, Al-Haragi said, without giving the timing. No independent confirmation of the death was available. A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the United States could not yet independently confirm Khamis’ death but said similar information was being received in Washington from “reliable sources.” Earlier on Monday, prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo of the International Criminal Court (ICC) told he may apply for an arrest warrant for Khamis. Human Rights Watch said members of the Khamis Brigade, a force commanded by him, appeared to have carried out summary executions of detainees whose bodies were found in a warehouse in Tripoli. The Hague-based ICC has already approved warrants for the arrest of Muammar Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi on charges of crimes against humanity. Khamis has already been reported killed twice during this year’s uprising against his father. There were rumours in March that he had died after a dissident Libyan air force pilot deliberately crashed his jet into the Gaddafi compound and in August the rebels claimed to have killed him. After both reports he appeared on Libyan television to prove he was still alive. Khamis was wounded in a 1986 U.S. air attack on Tripoli ordered by President Ronald Reagan. However, he took up a military career as commander of the 32nd Brigade, one of Libya’s best equipped military formations that played an important role in the government’s counter-insurgency campaign. Muammar Gaddafi’s wife and three of their other children including two sons entered Algeria on Monday morning, Algeria’s Foreign Ministry said, drawing criticism from Libya’s rebels who said sheltering the family was an “act of aggression”. –

Bumper northern rice harvest boost stocks may avert shortage
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (IRIN) – Bumper paddy production in Sri Lanka’s former conflict areas has averted an expected national rice shortage, experts say. Twin floods in January and February inundated more than 200,000 hectares of paddy land in the eastern and central regions of the island nation, destroying more than 700,000MT of the primary harvest estimated at 2.75 million tons. The main cultivation season runs from October to March. But now provincial agriculture departments are reporting a bumper secondary harvest 15 percent higher than that of 2010 . The secondary cultivation period is between April and September. “The northern production [boosting] the national supply makes a huge difference,” Nimal Disssnanayke, director of the Rice Research and Development Institute (RRDI), told IRIN. He said the production from the conflict-affected north began supplementing national stocks in mid-2010 after the 26-year-long civil war ended in May 2009 , “But it is this year that we have seen the full impact of that supply.” More than 40,500ha of paddy land was cultivated in the former conflict zone, providing a yield of more than 110,000MT, said Sithaparapillai Gnanachandran, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) northern area coordinator. Since the middle of 2010, donors and the Sri Lankan government have invested more than US$20 million in assisting paddy farming in the north. Of that, $8 million paid for about’,000MT of fertilizer for 2010 and 2011. FAO officials said the northern harvest would have been even better if some areas in the north had not suffered flood damage. “There was around 30 percent complete [flood] damage, but in the rest of the area the harvest was good even though we could not achieve the best yield figure,” said Ramanathan Pararajasingam, FAO programme officer. Farmers in the former conflict zone said before the end of the war, the harvest was mainly sold locally. Yields were reduced because chemicals and fertilizer could not be transported into the conflict areas due to security restrictions. “Now we get fertilizer, pesticides and other supplies without interruption,” said Christine Gurukularajah, a resident of Kilinochchi District, who has farmed 12ha of paddy for three decades. She said more paddy farmers in the former conflict zone were now able to sell at rates comparable to…
Risk for Autism Siblings High
Transcript by www.newsy.com BY STEFANIE REDDING ANCHOR: CHRISTINA HARTMAN A new study suggests children with autistic siblings face a greater risk of developing the disorder. Here’s MSNBC… “The study found that nearly one in five babies with an autistic older sibling went on to develop autism themselves and if the family has two children with autism there is 32 percent chance that the third sibling will develop the disorder.” Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton tells CBS — to date, experts did not think the risk from sibling to sibling was even half as high as the study found. “A couple of things, number one this is the largest study to date that looks at families with an autistic child and a subsequent risk for future children and also its done prospectively meaning they started at one point in time and followed those families through a period of time in the future in which the diagnosis was made so again found the rate of autism almost double what doctors previously thought it was.” CNN’s The Chart reports — researchers also turned up some interesting results based on demographic information. “Male babies experienced nearly three times the risk over female infants, 26% versus 9%. Age of parent, gender of the older sibling or birth orders were not predictors of the condition, meaning if the first child in the family does not have ASD, and the second child does, the risk percentages are still the same for the next child.” The study didn’t take into account other …
