Mac vs PC: How Apple Got Back In The Game [Steam]

Mac vs PC: How Apple Got Back In The Game [Steam]

For years - no, decades - games on the Mac have been a running joke, a constant source of derision from the dominant PC gaming community. But in a single move earlier this week, the Mac made a comeback. In unveiling not only the release of its line-up of first-party titles - classic games like Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead - but of the company's Steam digital download service on the Mac, Valve has shown how antiquated and out of place its retail competitors on the PC (and even on consoles) have become in the digital age. I'm not talking about the range of games on offer. The Steam Store's debut on the Mac later this year will no doubt contain only a fraction of the hundreds of games available on its PC counterpart. Nor am I talking about performance; the PC will always have the edge there, its ability to constantly be upgraded piece-by-piece placing it at a distinct advantage over Apple's Macs, which come "as is", and are rarely optimised for bleeding edge gaming performance. No, I'm talking about convenience. About accessibility. The real big announcement in Valve's move isn't' the fact Steam will be available on the Mac. It's the way that availability will be linked with a Steam user's PC account, via the new "Steam Play" service. If you own a PC, and already have a Steam account, but also have a Mac - or work with a Mac, or have a Mac laptop - then you can bring any compatible games over. Bought Team Fortress 2 on PC? You can download it again on your Mac. For free . Same story if you own a Mac at home and work with a PC, or have a Mac desktop and a PC laptop. As someone who works on a PC but has a Macbook for road trips, this is amazing news. Especially since it kicks sand in the face of Microsoft's under-performing Games for Windows Live initiative, which also sells PC ...

Portal 2 Coming To A Mac Near You [Portal]

The issue of Game Informer blowing the lid off Valve's Portal 2 is now in people's hands, and those people are scouring it for details. Most important of which is confirmation the game is going to be available on Mac. Not the world's greatest surprise, what with Valve's not-so-subtle teasing last week , but the thing with teasing - and not outright announcing - is that official confirmation still has to come somewhere down the line. And Game Informer's preview of the game looks to be just that. According to scans from the latest issue, in the details section of the mag's preview, Mac is clearly listed under the "platforms" section, alongside PC and Xbox 360. Should make airport lounge wait times on my Macbook a lot more enjoyable than they are at the moment. While you let this news soak in, why not read up on everything we know so far about Portal 2 . Kotaku ‘Shop Contest: Next-Gen Cereal System Edition Winners [Update] [Photoshop]

The Shop Contest, it's for breakfast now! Our call for entries for new game-themed cereals produced another raft of strong entries, including two from the same commenter, a first. Update: I apologize for the deleted comments in the original post. This was an erroneous double post and unfortunately the only one the system let me call back was the first one, which most people had commented in. Unfortunately I can't rescue or transfer those comments. Original post follows. Ordinarily I don't like to put more than one 'Shop from the same commenter in, but arrow_six's Bran Turismo was worthy. He later topped it with Elite Wheat Agents. I had to include both. arrow_six takes our (nonexistent) first prize for excellence. smash_bro really thought outside the cereal box with his GameStop advertisement of great deals on used cereals - using ones the community had created. But vernon_v's Kellogg's vs. Capcom is my personal favorite. More than that, it's a game that simply must happen. Again, here are your 20 best from last week. We'll have a new subject tomorrow. Portal 2 Adds Multiplayer Co-op, New & Familiar Characters [Valve]

Portal 2 Adds Multiplayer Co-op, New & Familiar Characters [Valve]

Officially released details on Valve's sequel to Portal were scant. Fortunately, retailer GameStop comes through with some major details, including the addition of a two-player cooperative campaign mode and all-new characters. GameStop 's description of the PC and Xbox 360 game indicates that Portal 2 is due later this year—the online retailer lists an October 26 release date—bringing with a cast of "dynamic new characters" and "never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs." And yes, as hinted at earlier, players will be reunited with GLaDOS. The only details on Portal 2's multiplayer mode from GameStop are that it will feature its own unique story-driven campaign. The "new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals," requiring players "to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively." Here's the full product description. Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game's two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate

Sony & Konami Both File "Arc" Trademarks, New Gradius Coming? [Trademarks]

A new trademark from PlayStation 3 maker Sony lends more credibility to the rumor that its forthcoming motion controller—still officially the PlayStation Motion Controller—will be called Arc. Konami's new Gradius Arc trademark, however, is something else. Or are they related? Siliconera just happened to dig up two recently filed Japanese trademarks, one for PlayStation Arc, the other for Gradius Arc, the second obviously somewhere in Konami's plans for another game in its venerable side-scrolling shoot 'em up series. Could it be one of the game's we'll be playing while holding Sony's new PlayStation Eye-powered wand? While we may not know Konami's plans for a new Gradius right now, we're definitely going to hear a lot more about Sony's motion controller next week at GDC . Gradius Arc? Borderlands DLC Getting Retail Release [Gearbox Studios]

Borderlands DLC Getting Retail Release [Gearbox Studios]

Borderlands, Gearbox Studios' surprise hit shooter of 2009, will soon be bundling its downloadable content into a single package, which will be released in a box for retail shelves. The game has so far had three pieces of DLC: The Zombie Island of Doctor Ned, Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot and the Secret Armory of General Knoxx. They've differed in quality, but since these kind of packs are normally big on savings (thogh pricing is still TBA), that shouldn't be too big a problem. It'll be out in the UK next month on 360 and PC, with a US release date (and PS3 edition) unconfirmed at this time. Borderlands DLC to get disc release [Eurogamer]
An Eyes-On Sneek Peak Of Tron Legacy… In 3D!!! [Movies]

An Eyes-On Sneek Peak Of Tron Legacy… In 3D!!! [Movies]

Disney held a special screening in Los Angeles today, giving us a sneak peek at the brand new Tron Legacy theatrical trailer, a brief return to the video game world of 1982 computer graphics landmark Tron. Then we saw it again. While other cities held their own Tron Legacy events today, offering a painfully quick 2-minute trailer and a polite request to get the hell out, the one held in Southern California gave Tron fans a second glance. As an added bonus, the director of Tron Legacy, Joseph Kosinski, was on hand for a Q&A session between trailer viewings. Also in attendance was original Tron director Steven Lisberger, who is acting in a producer role for the sequel. Let's talk about what we saw. The trailer—well, portions of it anyway—were in IMAX 3D, as immediately evidenced by the Walt Disney Pictures logo, which transformed into a bluish, scanlined version for authentic video game effect. The trailer opens with Sam, the son of Jeff Bridges' character Kevin Flynn from the first Tron, receiving word from his father's old friend Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) that he believes his father may still be alive—offering no theories that Flynn is trapped within a computer program. His evidence? A phone call from the old Flynn's Arcade, where son Sam travels—in extreme, reckless youth motorcycling fashion that should translate well to piloting a lightcycle—to seek out his father. After poking around the dusty abandoned arcade, full of still-functioning arcade cabinets, Sam stumbles upon the digitizer that sent the original Flynn into the virtual world where Programs fight for survival in familiar Tron arcade games. The following sequences were all quick cuts, some of them in dazzling 3D, including a stunning shot of the massive bipedal Recognizers, looking far more detailed, and more than one Program arming himself with a deadly disc, ready to throw at another...
Tree Plus Chainsaw Equals BioShock 2 Big Daddy [Clips]

Tree Plus Chainsaw Equals BioShock 2 Big Daddy [Clips]

I don't believe I've seen anything quite as beautiful as a man dressed as Jason from Friday the 13th carving the Big Daddy from BioShock 2 out of a tree using a chainsaw. I'd imagine it's hard to find a tree in the underwater city of Rapture, which is probably why Japanese chainsaw artist "Jason" here got the job. It's a good thing, as the masked murderer knocks this sculpture out of the park. It's a fascinating process, requiring the sort of precision work you don't normally see from a guy with a hockey mask wielding a chainsaw. I'm just glad they left out the scene where he relentlessly pursues the tree through the woods, it screaming and stumbling as he somehow keeps up at walking speed. Thanks Y HC for passing this along!

2K9 vs. 2K10: There May Be No Comparison, but This One Is Funny [Clips]

2K9 vs. 2K10: There May Be No Comparison, but This One Is Funny [Clips]

Glitch videos were commonplace after MLB 2K9's release but I never expected 2K Sports to make one of its one. That's the kind of penance 2K Sports has to do after MLB 2K9, I suppose. So this year, we can expect balls to be hit when a bat swings through them, we can expect them to be caught when a fielder camps underneath them, and players will actually collide, rather slide through the astral projection of the guy covering first (and leaning in entirely the wrong direction.) Rad! Serioudly, though. Don't overlook the better lighting and shading - everything looked like it was played on an overcast day last year - and the truer-to-life animations and signature motions (such as Mariano Rivera in the stretch.) The demo is out now (on Xbox 360 only) if you want a look at how the game plays. The full version is out Tuesday.

Billy Corgan Reacts to John Mayer’s Sexual Comments About Jessica Simpson

Billy Corgan has some harsh words for John Mayer , following the singer/songwriter's quips to Playboy magazine about Jessica Simpson being "sexual napalm." “As far as it pertains to her. I think for any person who has celebrity to sort of drop rocks at somebody else’s feet like that -- there’s things you should really just keep your mouths shut on. There’s things that should just be left alone,” Corgan, who is rumored to be dating Simpson, tells Rolling Stone magazine. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman believes Mayer is trying to self destruct, telling the publication, "Rather than take a year off or change his musical direction … some part of it is irritating his soul to the point where he’s trying to blow it up. Certainly a talented guy, but empathetically, standing on the sidelines, it’s hard to watch someone literally burn their career to the ground -- speaking as somebody who’s done it.” Simpson recently opened up about ex-boyfriend Mayer's interview on the "Late Show with David Letterman ," saying, "Yeah, I mean, normally you would think that somebody you care about would keep those intimate details to himself…," she went on to say. "I mean, it was definitely a compliment, in a way, but I don't really want people to know that about me. That's, you know, I'm like the

‘Real Housewives’ Dish Out Drama at Bravo Party

From the women of Orange County to the east coast wives of New York and New Jersey, "The Real Housewives" casts get together for the Bravo Upfront party, and they can help but gossip to "The Insider." "We're a bunch of trouble," Orange County housewife Lynne Curtin says of her cast mates. "I think the tip is to keep us apart for longer amounts of time and then get us together for short amounts of time," OC cast member Alexis Bellino said of inviting all the housewives to one party. "The Real Housewives of New York City" are back for a second season and Kelly Killoren Bensimon describes the show as "so much fun, so much drama."
