We added the unity sand ceremony to our wedding as an alternative to the unity candle ceremony because it seemed more practical and so elegantly captured the meaning of our two lives becoming one. And it created a lasting keepsake of our beautiful wedding day.
Using sand from the beach where our vows were exchanged, Miranda and I each filled a small heart-shaped vase. The cooperation needed to fill the vase symbolized the cooperation needed to make our new relationship grow.
The sand from both of our hands was joined and continued on as one into the vase, just as we would continue as one through life’s journey. While the ceremony itself was only a few minutes long, the love and commitment is symbolized will last a lifetime.
At the end of the ceremony, we sent the vase home to wait for our return. It sat on our bookcase, beautifully symbolizing the start of your new life together.
